Hidden deep in the mountains at the head of the Wellington River, Tali Karng was formed by a massive landslide over 1,500 years ago and is the only natural lake in the Victorian Alps. Founded by two Aborigines in the 19th century but regarded as mythical until discovered by white settlers in the 1880s, it’s now a popular overnight destination for self-reliant hikers.

From Macfarlane Saddle, the track heads south through snow gum forest and across high plains before descending steep forested slopes to the rocky shores of the lake, glimpsed through the trees only in the last minutes. The campground is at the western end and there are tumbling cascades, falls and rock pools where the Nigothuruk Creek enters the lake from the east. Detour via Echo Point on the return journey for a rare view of the sparkling lake in its dramatic mountain hideaway.

Take Care

All visitors, and especially walkers, should realise that weather conditions can change rapidly in alpine areas at any time of year. Snowfalls can be experienced at any time, so please be prepared with:

• warm clothing
• windproof and waterproof jacket
• gloves and hat
• strong footwear
• energy food and water
• compass and relevant topographical map

Also, please keep your group small. Four is ideal.
