What you might not realise while sharing a bottle of champers and a picnic hamper at the Royal Botanic Gardens is that you’re sitting on the ancestral lands of the local Boonerwrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) people. And one of the best ways to gain a greater insight into their customs and culture is by embarking on an Aboriginal Heritage Walk. The weekly tours are conducted by Aboriginal guides who explain native plant lore, identifying the species collected for culinary and medicinal purposes. Tour guides also discuss the kinds of tools used and cover the ceremonies performed in this traditional camping ground and meeting place. Copyright © 2009 |
